Harald Tomesch is a writer, yes, but also an inventor, vintner, painter, traveler, and film consultant. His creative life reaches far beyond the page, touching disciplines that have shaped both his perspective and his storytelling voice.

From patented innovation to award-winning winemaking, from brushstrokes to blog posts, these projects reflect the same curiosity and conviction found in his fiction. This page offers a glimpse into the broader world of Harald’s work – a world that continues to inform and inspire every story he tells.

Inventor: QikVin Wine Preservation

Dr. Harald Tomesch is the co-inventor of QikVin, a patented wine preservation system designed to eliminate oxidation without external pumps or gas. Unlike traditional vacuum or argon-based systems, QikVin uses a built-in piston to seal and serve wine, maintaining its quality glass after glass – a solution born from both scientific curiosity and a love of detail.

QikVin was awarded two U.S. patents for its novel design:

  • Patent No. 9938131: A wine dispenser that protects unpoured wine from oxidation
  • Patent No. 9815680: A wine container that prevents air from entering when partially full

Harald’s invention was featured on CBC’s Dragons’ Den. Also it made it to the contestant stage of Shark Tank, showcasing his ability to bring ideas from concept to market with clarity and conviction. The same inventive mindset – bridging physics, function, and storytelling – directly inspired the advanced light-based encryption system at the heart of The Hydrogen Bullet.

Vintner: Chiselled Grape Winery

From 2009 to 2019, Harald Tomesch founded and operated Chiselled Grape Winery, an award-winning boutique winery known for bold varietals, Old World techniques, and a deep respect for the craft of fermentation. What began as a passion project grew into a serious winemaking endeavor, earning national acclaim through the American Wine Society Commercial Wine Competition

Over a decade, Chiselled Grape received more than 20 medals, including:

  • Double Gold – 2009 Late Harvest Muscat Canelli
  • Gold – 2009 & 2010 Barbera, 2011 Chenin Blanc, 2016 Viognier
  • Silver – Syrah, Malbec, Merlot Reserve, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and more
  • Bronze – Riesling, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Festival Red & White Cuvees

Each vintage was a study in balance – of art, science, and patience – values that mirror Harald’s approach to storytelling. His experiences in the vineyard and cellar also infuse the sensory textures and settings of The Hydrogen Bullet, where wine, memory, and chemistry play layered narrative roles.

Painter: Oil Landscapes in the Tradition of Kusal and Roth

Harald Tomesch finds in painting what he often seeks in writing: place, stillness, and perspective. Working exclusively in oil, he paints landscapes inspired by the dramatic terrains of Iceland, the American Midwest, and the places he and his wife Renate have explored together.

Harald studied under Matthew Kusal and Michael Roth, whose influence is reflected in his atmospheric use of color, layered texture, and restrained composition. These works are deeply personal – meditative snapshots of time, memory, and movement, created not for galleries, but for the quiet satisfaction of seeing a place truly captured.

Traveler Blogger: TravelTheseStones.com

Alongside his wife Renate, Harald Tomesch documents their shared journeys on TravelTheseStones.com, a travel blog that blends reflection, photography, and story-rich explorations of faith, place, and history.

Whether they’re walking centuries-old pilgrimage routes, tracing biblical geography, or visiting tucked-away cultural landmarks, the blog offers a personal lens on travel as meaning-making. Harald’s background in theology and writing brings depth to every post, while Renate’s voice and vision offer grounded, human moments of wonder and wit.

It’s not just a record of places visited, it’s a log of lives lived thoughtfully, one stone at a time.

Film Consultant: Moon Brothers Productions

Harald Tomesch served as a consultant on two narrative films by Moon Brothers Productions:

Both films explore themes of grief, redemption, and moral struggle – spaces where Harald’s background in theology, systems thinking, and storytelling added nuance behind the scenes. His contributions helped shape script authenticity, character development, and symbolic depth. While uncredited in traditional ways, his role was a meaningful extension of the same intellectual curiosity and narrative sensitivity that drive his fiction.
